Welcome to China!

Well, we are officially settled into our apartment in Ganzhou, China!

We left Chicago on Monday, September 29th, and flew to Seattle. From there, we flew to Beijing (10 hours, whew!), and then to Guangzhou (about a 4 hour flight), the third biggest city in China. There we were met by our friend Tanner, who showed us to the hotel that he had found. It was pretty nice for only a couple hundred Yuan (about $30) a night. Matt and I were just so happy to be in an actual bed after 20 hours of airplane sleep! We had our first taste of funny Chinese-English translations in our hotel room...the toilet had instructions written on it that read something like, "Pleases do not throw the rubbish in the toilet trough." :)
The city of Guangzhou is really cool--we didn't have much time to explore, but I'm sure we'll be back. Feeling unadventurous, we ate our first Chinese meal at McDonald's. The next morning we found the bus station and boarded a bus to take us to Ganzhou. After about an hour it stopped and we used the bathroom, which offered our first exposure to the "squat toilets" which were a bit tricky for me (Nora) as they involve simply hovering over a hole in the floor with water running into it. Lovely! Our bus trip took a whopping 7 hours as our bus driver was in no hurry (it only took Tanner 5 hours the day before), but finally we arrived in Ganzhou! We were greeted by the dean of foreign studies, Jeff, who escorted us to our new apartment and then to dinner. Our first REAL Chinese meal was eaten then, and consisted of many dishes, including soup, whole stewed duck with herbs, spicy chicken, sweet and sour pork, a "sampling plate" which included pig ear and various mushrooms, and more. Our host Jeff was very gracious and told us about our school and what our schedules would be like.
Our apartment when we moved in was a bit dirty, to say the least. Matt and I are convinced that the foreign teacher who lived in it last did not clean much--wait, no, EVER. It had not been cleaned in a very, very long time. But Tanner dutifully took us to the store, we bought an army of cleaning supplies, and spent a long day cleaning. I was feeling a tad bit negative about our new living conditions, but when we were finally done, we realized that the apartment is really quite nice! The several inches of filth covering everything made it a bit hard to see, was all.
Once we had a clean apartment, our exploring of Ganzhou could really begin. We mostly eat "street food" which is what everyone tells you not to eat before you go, but it's really very good. Our favorite dishes so far are the fried noodles, fried rice, and steamed dumplings. We also tried the bbq one night which was really good. So fun to try so many new things!
The hardest thing by far the language barrier. Matt and I are trying to learn Mandarin, but are finding it pretty tough. Tanner is helping us study, but it's slow going. One of the other foreign teachers from New Zealand, Chris, seems to be soaking it up like a sponge! I content myself a little knowing he's been here for three weeks, but when he starts spouting off Chinese to the street vendors as Matt and I stand there staring, it's a bit rough! :) One other thing that is taking some getting used to is the stares we get everywhere we go. In Guangzhou, people were more blatant and would stare open-mouthed, but in Ganzhou people want to save more face and try to be slightly more discreet. My favorite incident was when Tanner, Matt, and I were walking down the sidewalk and this lady walked by us, looked us up and down, and went, "HA!" We got a good laugh about that one. Another fav. is when people want to show off their English, so when they walk by they say "Heellloooo!" At any given time we will be walking down the street and will hear several heelloooos as we go on our way. One brave child the other day came up to us and said, "Herrow! How are you?!" He was so excited that he'd said it right, when we replied "Fine! How are you?" he could only blush and run away.
Okay, this is getting super long, so I will be done for today. Hope this gave everyone a taste of what life has been like so far!! Tomorrow we start teaching, so we will have lots of stories once that begins...
Love and miss you all!
